An official of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Ogun State, Abass Olalekan, has been taken into custody following the death of a corps member, Victoria Ariyo, in what authorities describe as an ongoing investigation.
Ariyo, who was serving in Abeokuta South Local Government Area, reportedly passed away last Tuesday after undergoing a pregnancy termination. Sources indicate that she developed complications after the procedure, which ultimately led to her death. She was later laid to rest at Kobape Cemetery along Kobape-Sagamu Road in Abeokuta.
This incident comes just weeks after another corps member, Adeleye Mary, died under unclear circumstances within the same local government area. Mary had been serving at Ogun State Television as her Place of Primary Assignment.
According to a source, both deceased individuals were known to be friends.
“The first lady d!ed at her residence, which is not far from her PPA. They found her lifeless body in the apartment and, up till now, nobody can tell the cause of her d3ath,” the source said.
Reports further suggest that Ariyo’s death may be connected to complications from the procedure. It has also been alleged that Olalekan, who serves as the Local Government Inspector (LGI) for Abeokuta South, was in a personal relationship with the deceased, which reportedly resulted in the pregnancy.
“That is the fact in issue,” a police source who confirmed the arrest said.
The same source raised concerns about the nature of such a relationship, questioning the appropriateness of “romancing someone that should be in your care.”
Confirming the arrest, authorities stated:
“He is in our custody at the command’s headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta.”
Police officials have clarified that, at this stage, there is no confirmed connection between Ariyo’s death and the earlier case involving Adeleye Mary.
Spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed that investigations are ongoing.
“I can confirm that the case of the demise of Victoria Ariyo is under investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department,” Babaseyi said in a brief statement.
